Appendix F: Plagiarism and Electronic Citing Lesson Plan

  1. This lesson plan was developed over two years with the school Media Specialist to inform students of the proper way to cite material, and the potential dangers of web-surfing.
  2. It ultimately led to students creating their own material from the lesson, a “Guide to Safe Internet Sites” (See Appendix H) and reflected my awareness of the dangers of technology use without proper instruction.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Day 1:

Whole group introduction of primary and secondary sources as well as information on plagiarism including open-ended questions so teachers can verify students’ knowledge of topic.

 

Break students up into small assigned groups (4-5 students) and hand out and review plagiarism worksheets 

 

Have students read first two sections of handout and discuss information with group.

 

Day2:

 

Quick review of day 1information

 

Students will complete plagiarism handout and discuss acceptable ways to paraphrase without plagiarizing.

 

Students will complete plagiarism exercise with partners

 

Show Power Point on Plagiarism

 

Day 3:

 

Quick review of plagiarism.

 

Hand out and review bibliographic format sheets and answer student's inquiries for clarification.

 

Students will be paired off for brainstorming and completion of bibliographic cards using a choice of print and technology sources

 

Whole group session to re-view activities

 

Bibliographic review sheet citing 5 sources to be completed in pairs (students will have study guide to assist with completion of assessment)

 

Re-introduction of Pre-Assessment to evaluation student learning.
